Governors

Our Governance Structure

Within the STAR Multi Academy Trust, each school has a Local Governing Board (LGB) that supports the work of the school and the Trust. The LGB has certain delegated authority to oversee the running of the school under the Scheme of Delegation as defined by our Board of Trustees.

The STAR MAT Scheme of Delegation

Further information about our governance structure, including details of our Trustees and Members, is available via the STAR MAT website.

Our Local Governing Board (LGB)

Our Local Governing Board (sometimes called our Local Governing Body) is responsible for working with the school to ensure that it delivers a high quality education and safe environment for all our children. Together with the Headteacher, who is responsible for day-to-day management of the school, the Governors set the school’s aims and some school specific policies.

Governors are people who volunteer their time to work together as part of the LGB team and who wish to make a positive contribution to their communities. Governors do not need an education background; they have an interest in the role of schools in society and have enquiring minds which contribute to the effective running of the school and the educational achievements and wellbeing of its pupils.

Main aims of our Governing Board

The purpose of governance is to provide:

  • Strategic leadership
  • Accountability and assurance
  • Strategic engagement.

LGBs carry out a number of important duties alongside the Trust, which include:

  • Ensuring our children are safe.
  • Working with school staff to ensure inclusion and equality for all.
  • Reviewing policy on the school’s curriculum and collective worship.
  • Setting standards for pupils’ behaviour.
  • Making sure school buildings are welcoming and safe.
  • Setting and monitoring the school’s aims and policies.
  • Agreeing the school’s development plan and monitoring progress against clear objectives.
  • Determining how the school’s budget is spent.
  • Understanding the views of our stakeholders, including children, parents and staff.
  • Hearing appeals and grievances.

Our meetings and membership

Our LGB usually meets six times a year. Minutes of the LGB meetings are available on request from the School Office or clerktogovs@starmat.uk

Attendance at meetings is recorded and published on the Trust website

Governors are expected to declare any interests they have. This Register of Business Interests is available via the Trust website.

Our LGB consists of 6 governors; the Headteacher, two elected Parent Governors, one elected Staff Governor; 2 Foundation Governors; and the remaining are Trust-Appointed Governors. The Register of Interests includes a list of our current governors, how they were appointed to the LGB, and their term of office.

Our Co-Chairs of Governors are Rebecca Everitt and Michelle Kershaw who can be contacted by writing to the school address, or emailing cofg@rs.starmat.uk

See below for more information about each of our Governors.

If you are interested in volunteering for the school or Trust as a school governor, please see our latest vacancies and application form available on the Trust website.

Meet the Governors

I became a governor at Riverside in 2021 when my son was in year 1, I now have a  daughter at the school too and am proud to be in a position to support the school in continuing to provide a warm and welcoming environment where every child can reach their full potential.
For my day job I am a solicitor specialising in corporate transactions, advising clients who are buying or selling businesses. I aim to bring the private sector skills learned over many years of experience to the school environment to support the school in its ongoing development.

I have taught across the key stages and found my niche in Early Years. I am now Early Years Leader and Assistant Headteacher.

I am working with the EYFS Team to create a new Early Years unit with a  shared provision across the 3 classroom and outdoor areas to enhance the learning environment and experiences for all our little learners.

I am delighted to be a staff governor at Riverside and want to help support in the development of our school as we move forwards.

I have recently been elected as co-chair of Riverside.  I have worked in education for over 10 years and now work as the CFO for a multi academy trust of mainstream primary and special schools in East Yorkshire. My strengths are finance, audit and risk.  Having moved into the neighbouring area recently with my partner and our children I am keen to have a link to the local community. My step children attend  STAR Mat schools so I have a vested interest in the trust. I have previous experience of being a governor in similar schools and am delighted to be working with Riverside.

“I was elected as a Parent Governor for Riverside in November 2023 with my son in Year 5 and daughter in Year 3. I’m extremely proud to have this opportunity to support our school and I am looking forward to helping continue its great work.

Professionally, I am a Programme Manager working for Network Rail within their network enhancement programme which provides me with numerous skills which I can transfer to the governor role (such as strategic planning and business change). Outside of work I am a sailing instructor and coach, and actively support both training at the local club and encouraging participation across the region. Seeing the development of participants as they engage with this sport is extremely rewarding. I plan to bring my range of experience to the governor team for the future development of our school.”
