Parent/carers are responsible for the safe arrival and collection of their children to and from the school site. School does provide some outdoor supervision for first aid purposes from 8.40am until bell time, but official responsibility for pupils does not engage until pupils enter the school buildings through their designated entrances.
Parents are of course reminded of these arrangements (specific entrances and timings) through school newsletters.
For older pupils who may walk to school without adults, if a child has unauthorised absence or is not arriving on time, then school may request a parent make alternate arrangements. Likewise, if school has concerns about pre or post school arrangements (children not walking home safely, or being required to key hold etc inappropriate to their age or maturity) then again home contact may be made to discuss this.
Whilst school is not responsible for pupils who are not on site, it is in the interests of pupil safety and wellbeing that home school communications allow school to be clear about the whereabouts of every child every day and we have a legal responsibility to maintain accurate attendance registers.
It is a parental responsibility to inform school if their child is unable to attend statutory schooling.
However if contact from home is not received, school will endeavour to make first day of absence contact with families to secure information on the absence and code registers accordingly.
From June 2017, school will initiate a texting service where pupils have been marked absent but no message has been received.
Our system, revised for June 2017:
- If your child is absent please ring 01937832899 and leave a message or speak to us directly
- If you are coming to school anyway with another child, you can always speak to us directly
- If we have not received a message from you by 9.15am your child will be marked as absent/unauthorised on our register
- In this case, you will receive a text message (on your registered mobile number) from school requiring you to ring us with a reason for absence. You can respond by phone or email
- Where no response is received the unauthorised absence mark will remain on the register
- We would far rather you ring/email us before we have to text!
Where no message is received, absences will be coded as unauthorised and where such absence accrues, intervention may be required through the NYCC Prevention Service. This is a statutory legal duty on the school.

Tour de Yorkshire-Important information for Parents
To mark the start of the Tour de Yorkshire Women's and Men's races , there is a plan to line Tadcaster Bridge with 405 children from the town. Each child will represent a day that the bridge was closed following the devastating floods and will be a symbolic image of unifying the town.
There are two meeting points in the town to safely transfer the children to the bridge. On the East this is the Quaker Burial Ground on Oxton Lane, and on the West this is Tadcaster Leisure Centre, Station Road, LS24 9JE. Children will be safely escorted by chaperones to the bridge on closed roads and will be returned back to the meeting points immediately after each race has left to be collected by parents and carers.
Children are asked to wear their school sweatshirts but can wear their own clothes underneath and on the bottom if they prefer. All children registered will be issued with a wristband in advance and we ask that a contact number is written clearly on the wristband for safeguarding. Whilst the children are on the bridge families, parents and carers are free to join the spectators in the town and watch the race.
Set your TVs to record at home as both races are shown live on ITV and in 177 countries worldwide including Eurosport.
Please note that places are limited and only children that are registered and wearing a allocated wristband will be allowed on the bridge.
If your child/ren would like to attend both races, please make sure you register for both races -
By registering your child to take part in this event you are giving permission for them to be chaperoned to/from the start by official chaperones. Chaperones will be contacted separately with additional details and only official chaperones will be allowed to accompany pupils onto the bridge. By signing up, you also give permission for pupil images to be used in print , online and on television.
We have some very talented young writers at Riverside, and we are inviting them to put their skills to good use, by entering the ‘Poems and Pictures’ poetry competition. A selection of winning poems will be published in a national poetry book – a great incentive to have a go! As well as sending entries into the competition, we will also be awarding prizes in school for the best poems in KS1 and KS2.
Poems need to be eight lines long, they must rhyme, and the theme is ‘Seasons’ or ‘Climate Change’. They should be written neatly in children’s own handwriting, and may be illustrated. An entry form can be collected from teachers and must be filled in and returned to school with the entry by April 28th. Further details can be found on the poems and pictures website.
Our Debating Competition
On Wednesday 15th March, six children from Riverside Community Primary School (us) competed in a debating competition alongside five other schools.
We set off in a mini bus from Tower Taxis around about twenty minutes after we had arrived at school. On the way there everyone was very chatty and excited, but as soon as we spotted the Civic Centre and how grand and important it looked, everybody soon simmered down.
We walked into the building trying to look like very professional businessmen/women but our attempts weren’t that successful. When we arrived at the front desk, Mrs Cowler (our teacher) informed the desk secretary of our arrival.
Whilst nervously shuffling about on the spot, we scanned the room to check out the competition. After a few minutes, one of the County Council members opened the doors to the debating chamber.
After waiting a further five more minutes, everybody settled themselves down and laid their notes out on the desks. The councillors picked a name out of a “hat” to decide which school would speak first (it wasn’t us!)
The questioners (Hannah Redmond, Sebastian Gray, Ruby Simpson and Harry Shooter) had to listen very carefully to all of the speakers so that they could ask difficult questions to try and, if you will, “psych out” all of the other schools so that they would be blown off course.
Eventually, after four of the six schools had spoken, it was Indi’s and Sophie’s turn to speak. Indi was debating why homework isn’t a waste of time whereas Sophie had to debate on why homework is a waste of time. Because we had practised so many times in the classrooms at break times and at home we had managed to memorise the speeches and questions, so at the competition we felt more prepared and confident.
After all the schools had spoken the councillors went into a different room so that they could add up the scores privately without being overheard. They finally came back into the room and sat down at the front.
They announced the results: “First place goes to….. Riverside!” We all sat there squirming in our seats, overjoyed at the thought of going to compete in the finals of competition. “First runners-up…. Athelstan.” The councillors called both Athelstan and us up to the front and gave Athelston a small silver medal and then presented Riverside with large, shiny gold medals as well as a plaque and certificate.
All round we had lots of fun and really, really enjoyed it. It was such a brilliant day out and we cannot wait to go to the finals in June!
