MEET THE TEAM
Happy New Year!
Welcome back to Year 5 with Mr Calvert and Mrs Thompson.
Introducing... RED January (Run Every Day) or if you prefer... MED January (Move Every Day). We will start every day off by moving around the playground for 10 minutes; boosting our health, fitness and mental wellbeing. As well as physical advantages, we would like children to recognise the positive impact that exercise can have on mental health. This will be at the start of every day on the bottom playground and children may come to school in their PE trainers but they do need their school shoes for after. They do not need sportswear as we are trying to make this as accessible as possible and show how simple it is to fit 10 minutes exercise in to your day.
Our policy for homework continues to bes little and often. Children have been given their new spellings for the term to copy in to their planners each week, the list is a half-termly overview and there will be a weekly test. This half term has a large focus on the Y5/6 spelling words that children need to be demonstrating in their writing. Reading books come home daily and we encourage children to read for approximately 10 minutes a night. Please would you also encourage them to record this reading in their planner. To help with their maths, children are given SMIRF targets are encouraged to practise these skills daily. Where possible, we recommend half an hour a day - 10 minutes reading, 10 minutes SMIRF practise and 10 minutes spelling. There are also websites such as times tables rockstars, IXL and Purple Mash to further support your child.
Our class novel this term is 'How to Train Your Dragon' by Cressida Cowell. We would like to encourage parents to purchase a copy of this book for their children if possible but we do have a few copies in school if this is not possible. This book has proven extremely popular in the past and helps to support our 'Raiders and Settlers' topic well.
Children require indoor shoes at school and will need P.E kits on Wednesday and Friday if in 5WC and Tuesday and Friday if in 5JH.
We hope your children have another great term and please do not hesitate to contact us should you require any further information.
Please see the following pdf document for the termly curriculum overview.

We have had a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon competing in our Greek Olympics. The children competed as one of 5 city states. Every child took part in 4 events: the sprint (stade), standing long jump, javelin and marathon (long run!). Many children qualified for the finals and some exceptional pupils were placed gold, silver and bronze. We look forward to awarding these pupils later this week.
Thank you to all for providing costumes to help bring the event to life. We hope you enjoy the photographs.
