School Council

School Council

Our school has a well-established and active school council.  Representatives are elected from each class to serve for one year.  A Chairperson and Secretary are elected from within the council (usually pupils from Year 5 and 6).

The school council work to represent pupil voice.  They bring the views of their class to the meetings which often include concerns and positive suggestions for improvements. Their remit is also to look wider than just our school. Members  work alongside other schools in the area and seek to have  a positive impact on the local and wider community. Candidates on the council make a short statement of how they feel they can make a difference to Riverside School. They are presented with a badge to indicate their belonging to the council and a certificate at the end of their term of office.

During the academic year 2015 to 2016 the list of achievements for our school council included:

Selecting a charity for our Christmas fund raising (Candlelighters)

Continuing to support/sponsor ‘Edmund’ our overseas student

Creating an ‘ideas’ list for ‘What makes a good learning environment?’

Taking part in learning walks around the school alongside governors

Creating an ‘ideas’ list for ‘What makes a good lesson?’

Taking candidates/visitors for school vacancies on tours of the school

Creating questions and interviewing job candidates

Hosting school council’s from our STAR Alliance (Primary and Secondary) to create a charter to support our beliefs for Equalities and Diversity

Selecting new rewards lanyards for each year group

Selecting new information boards for use around school

Choosing styles and colours for our toilet refurbishments

Acting as ‘buddies’ for the Skipping Challenge

Forwarding suggestions for lunchtime improvements

Reporting to Governors on our achievements

Future plans include

Joint learning walks and lesson observations with other schools

Interviewing Governors to learn more about their roles

Fund raising for in-school projects
